Character Design evaluation
For this assignment I started off looking at various sources online to get inspiration from. I researched fables and myths online and my initial idea was to do Poseidon-god of the seas from the greek myths. I used my sketchbook to sketch different ideas and concepts. However, I then decided to go for the tale of little red riding hood. This was the sketch that I then developed onto photoshop by scanning it. By sketching various ideas and characters it helped me to decide between the two and which one was the best. I’m happy with software I used to design my character because I think it’s the most appropriate for this specific task and I think I would have struggled if I were to have done it in illustrator.
I was inspired by Carter Goodrich’s character designs which he has created for many well known animations such as Finding Nemo, despicable me, The Croods, and many more.
I asked for feedback from family members and they advised me to add mor shading so that there was more contrast which I changed. I think I could have made more effort into this assignment by coming up with more positions the character could be in so that there’s a better view of things and more turnarounds.
Weather app evaluation:
For this assignment I chose to do the weather app as it’s more graphic based, which is what I wanted. I started off by researching apps in general and then weather apps more specifically.I also looked for inspiration and ideas for what could make my app more specific to a certain type of viewer. I decided to design my weather app targeted at audiences who play sports and outdoor activities. So the weather app I designed is basically for people who would like to know what sorts of sports or other outdoor activities are advised for the current weather. Activities and sports such as football, swimming, golf, and even picnics. As well as providing you with general weather information, it gives you a list on what sports or activities you can plan for the day. With the app you are also able to point your smartphone in any direction and the app will indicate where the hottest or coldest spot is nearby. You are able to swipe around the hour wheel to view the weather for that specific hour. In the weekly forecast you can press on each day for more specific information regarding precipitation and wind speed etc.
I used my sketchbook to come up with ideas and concepts, which I then developed and experimented on photoshop. For the symbols I would use for the app I scanned in previous sketches and developed them on photoshop. However, I used illustrator for my final designs. I also used illustrator for my app icon. To design the rest of the weather app I used Photoshop.
I think I could have maybe incorporated more of my research, ideas, and concepts into my final design. I should have spent more time designing the final app and incorporating my initial ideas, which I didn’t include because of the lack of time. Overall I am pleased with my final outcome. I believe I completed what was asked in the assignment brief and carefully planned it out.
Final Major Project evaluation
For my Final major project I decided to do something graphic based, as it’s what I enjoyed the most throughout this course and also what I will be studying later on in university so I thought this project could be of help and use to me (experience wise).
I began by looking at branding in general and the different types of transport ads available how they’re currently being branded. I then saw an advert regarding P&O cruises; the Britannia more specifically, and decided to base my project on the rebranding of the Britannia cruise ship. The Britannia cruise ship is currently being branded in a way that is appealing to an older more elderly generation (retired people) as most cruise ships are. It also has a traditional British approach. I decided to re brand it for a more specific public such as families and disabled children.
I started off by researching transport, holiday, and family branding. I also looked at various examples of well-known brands such as Eurostar, P&O cruises, and their logos. I researched the history of advertising, posters etc. I then sketched out some ideas and developed them in my sketchbook so that I could then experiment with them digitally. I used my sketchbook as a foundation for my designs and bought them into photoshop and illustrator to build upon it.
The software I used to design the brochure & logo was illustrator and I used Photoshop to design the website edit images of the cruise ship. However, I had previously used In Design to design the brochure but the software wasn’t at it’s best and did not work properly, also the version I was using at home was old and I couldn’t open my work in college. So instead I continued my work on illustrator and worked mostly at home as the software version didn’t allow me to open the file in the college computers. I think I could have saved more time by working on illustrator from the start instead of having to re-do/change everything again.
After I had come up with some ideas and work I asked for feedback from the teachers to see what I could improve, what could be changed or taken away, and further advice. This helped me expand on my work and build on it. Although I am fairly pleased with my final outcome I would’ve liked to of spent more time experimenting digitally for a better outcome and final piece. Regardless of this, I think I spent my time correctly; researching, sketching, and working on the final piece.
